Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej currently Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born November 12, 1961. She was the first Romanian to be awarded a score of 10 in an Olympic event. Bela Karolyi later Romanian Gymnastics Coach, came across Comaneci at just six years old. Her first competitive event was the national junior championships which she finished 13th in 1969. She won the American Cup in New York City in 1976, becoming the first woman in history to complete a backward double salto as an unmounting from uneven bars parallel to each other. She began her career when she joined her sister Nina Wayne to perform in Ice Capades, a traveling spectacle of entertainment. They featured ice skating shows with theatrical shows.
